Wondering what you need to consider before beginning an online course?
This checklist is a great place to start!

Prior to the course

  • Order textbooks or materials
    • You can search for books in the UMass Dartmouth Bookstore.
    • Make sure to order the correct edition or version. Buying the wrong materials will delay your participation and may affect your class standing or grade.

  • Know the start and end date of your online course.
    • You will be able to access your course 72 hours before the first day of class.
    • If you add or swap a course after classes begin, it can take up to 24 hours for you to access your new class.

  • Make a plan for how you will keep track of your coursework (paper or virtual calendar).
    • Schedule time to work on your online course.
    • Add due dates for all assignments, projects and exams to your calendar.

  • Are there any time considerations such as your job or family commitments you need to plan around? What steps you can take ahead of time to alleviate any potential stressors?
    • For example: Are you planning your school schedule around soccer games, carpooling, or shift changes at work?

  • Login into the myUMassD Portal.
    • Make sure your username and password work.
    • If you have problems contact Access Management at 508-999-8532.
    • Check out the "Quick Links" area in the Portal. This is how you will access myCourses.

  • Contact your instructor if you have questions about the course and/or if you need accommodations.
  • Review this orientation website.
  • Make sure your computer is updated (system, virus checker, etc.).
  • Check with University Extension to ensure all financial aid forms are complete and holds are removed from your account.
